Leveling Blocks vs Ramps

Interlocking blocks, trailer blocks, step ramps and curved ramps all raise a wheel — but they behave differently. Compare them before you buy.

Leveling blocks beside a travel trailer at a campsite

Both blocks and ramps raise a wheel to level your RV; they solve the problem differently. Blocks let you choose the height in steps. Ramps give you a fixed, smooth profile you drive up and stop on.

The options

TypeHow it worksStrengthsWatch out for
Interlocking leveling blocksStack and lock to the height you needPrecise height, compact storageCan shift if not aligned squarely
Trailer leveling blocksSimilar, sized for trailer tyresStable platform, good for tandem axlesBulkier
Fixed-height step rampsPre-set step heightsQuick, no stackingLimited height options
Curved ramp levelersA smooth curve you drive upGradual transition, easy to useFewer discrete positions, larger footprint

Choosing between them

  • Variable pitch heights → interlocking blocks give you the most control.
  • Very small corrections → a single block or a shallow step ramp is often enough.
  • Frequent stops, want speed → curved ramps reduce the fiddling.
  • Tandem axles → check the product supports the load across both tyres.

Whatever you choose, the tyre must be supported across its full contact patch, and the support must be on firm, level ground. Blocks on soft grass or mud will sink or slide.

Where an app fits in

The leveling equipment raises the wheel. What it does not do is tell you which wheel and how much. That calculation is what a leveler like Qorvan RoamLevel handles: it reads tilt and reports the height and number of blocks for each wheel position. Some block types — fixed step ramps and curved ramps — have no count, so the app simply tells you to place the ramp on the indicated wheel. See how to level an RV.

The Qorvan RoamLevel app supports interlocking blocks, travel-trailer blocks, fixed-height step ramps and curved ramp levelers. Choose the type you actually carry, and the app adjusts the recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

How high can I stack leveling blocks?
Follow the block manufacturer’s limit — stacking too high reduces stability. If you need a very tall stack, the pitch is probably too steep for the site.
Are curved ramps better than blocks?
Curved ramps are quicker to drive onto and give a smooth transition, but they offer fewer discrete heights and take up more storage space.
Do I need blocks on both wheels of an axle?
Usually you raise the low side only. Follow your RV manufacturer’s guidance, and keep the tyre fully in contact with the support.
